"Synthesis in a Painted House was written 10 years ago when I was 16. I had made friends with some recent graduates from my school who worked at the local airstream coffeeshop. They took me in as one of their own, and one of them even gave me my first guitar lessons. I'd go over to their old creaky house in downtown Winston-Salem, NC (my home town) to hang out, play guitar, and listen to music. The house was painted all these beautiful pastel colors, and the atmosphere was always so positive and warm. This song, as abstract as the lyrics are, was born out of the feeling of belonging those people and that house provided me." - Tyler Canada
Being a person in this world can be overwhelming. We’re constantly worried about the future, lingering in past regrets, and too distracted to live in the present. Life is making one decision after another, some good and some bad. Emotions cloud our judgment, pain is persistent, and mistakes are inevitable. Sometimes it’s hard not to wonder how much easier things would be if we could simply program ourselves to be reliable and free of the stress of living.
This is what “Machine” explores. The music video (found in the youtube link provided) takes this idea and turns it on its metallic head. It stars a little robot named Floyd who wants nothing more than to be human. He sees the joy and wonder in being alive and sets out on a grand adventure - camping, skateboarding, throwing a dance party, taking a beach day, and lying on his back watching the planes fly overhead. He imagines what beautiful places the people inside must be going to. Humans and machines working together to make the impossible possible… I suppose the one thing we all have in common is that we pine for that which we can’t have.
